Looking for a fatal Distopia (1939) by Marina Fomenko participates in Shatters of War exhibition at Baltic Branch of NCCA, Kaliningrad

Dates: November 20 - December 5.

Curated by Irina Gorlova, Elena Tsvetaeva

An exhibition Shatters of War presents artists for whom the theme of historical memory, of war “shatters” which left traces not only on the map of Europe, but also in private lives, is extremely important. The name of the project evokes a problem of interpretation of historical events in the present.

“Evidences” of WWII heritage are presented in artists’ works through memories and associations, which arise after a contact with pages of family history, with places, whose images were distorted by war, and dates connected with turning points in the life of the countries and its people.

Mirosław Bałka, Hubert Czerepok, Marina Fomenko, Jochen Gerz, Haim Sokol, Leonid Tishkov, Yuri Vassiliev and Natalya Zintsova do not reenact the history of military battles, but visualize traumas of war. Shatters of war, dispersed in all European countries and families, pierce body and conscience of today, and it’s crucially important to feel the pain caused by them nowadays, when the world is torn away by new wars.
